The concept for this ride was for three cyclists with very different stories who came together to chase the sunset. Departing from the cycling mecca of Girona, the riders started the route at La Comuna cafe, which belongs to Ironman superstar Jan Frodeno and his equally successful wife Ema Snowsill. This is a very peaceful little place with delicious coffee and, equally important for those of us with a sweet tooth, delicious cake.
As we waited for the ride to begin, the name of our cafe got me thinking;
Noun. Comuna, feminine (plural comunas) A group of people who share an ideology and work together.
The Canet D’Ardi Loop
35.80km
Total Distance Ridden
541m
Elevation
And just like La Comuna, the same ideology and love for cycling is what brings each and every cyclist here today, even if the routes to get here were completely different.
The planned route focuses entirely on the panoramic views that offer a combination of picturesque country lanes and open roads through epic landscapes. That said, when riding out of Girona, there's no way to go wrong with so many riding options available to the cyclist.
We asked the cyclists to share their unique story to help us better understand this ride.
Words from the cyclists:

Daylin Membreño – Nicaragua
My name is Daylin Membreño. I am a 26-year-old Nicaraguan, an accountant, a cycling guide, and a lover of road and gravel cycling.
The reason I came to Girona was due to the unfortunate and sad socio-political crisis in my country, Nicaragua, which began on April 18, 2018. Nicaragua has a long history of political corruption, just like other countries today, where the rights and freedoms to which we, as human beings, are entitled, are not respected. I came to Spain with my mother and my partner, with the goal of helping to improve my family's quality of life.
The truth is, I never imagined that I would find myself surrounded by such a unique and beautiful cycling community, an incredible cycling paradise, the warm affection of the city, among many other things that make Girona unique and special. What was a very, very bad situation for me, transformed into a positive situation with a new healthy lifestyle and a love for cycling that began three years ago, for which I feel very fortunate for the incredible bonds of friendship it has allowed me to create. As my partner says, we turned "lemons into lemonade." Thank God for allowing me to enjoy good health and to be able to practice this wonderful sport called cycling.

weakness.»
Cycling for me is a sense of freedom, a source of joy, and a form of meditation where I have found refuge in my moments of emotional weakness. It is also a great source of strength and inspiration in my life. I must be honest and say that it is an addiction I am not willing to give up, because it gives me the ability to face situations with the best attitude I could imagine.
It was a great group of cyclists who joined for the ride and quickly made me feel at home. As is often the case here in Girona, we were able to ride on quiet and beautiful roads. The panoramic views during the Golden Hour were incredible. The colors, the route, and the camaraderie were a good combination that, I imagine, will surely shine through in the photos from that day.

Matthew Stamatis – Durban, South Africa
I traveled to Girona in 2019 on a cycling trip with a group of friends and immediately fell in love with the area. Its culture, its cafes, its local restaurants, and, of course, the rides too. In July 2021, I found myself looking for job opportunities in Europe with the possibility of starting a life outside of South Africa. After my trip, I fell in love with Girona, it seemed like the perfect place to start my search. So, in August 2021, I came from South Africa to look for job opportunities more diligently. A week after arriving, a dream opportunity presented itself. I will be working for the Israel Start-Up Nation team, so I'm still here! Now I am lucky enough to call Girona my home and know that I will be able to enjoy endless roads and trails on my bike as far as I can see into my future.
When I started cycling, it was just a means of spending time with new friends I had met at university. Since then it has become so much more… it has become a peaceful escape from the everyday chaos of life.

Cycling has become a helpful tool for making decisions when I've needed time to think about things or make choices I've been struggling with. Most importantly, it has opened doors to meeting amazing people, going to wonderful places, making lifelong friends, and creating this dream life I'm currently living!
Our route starting from Canet D'Adri is one of my favorite short loops. When you're pressed for time but still need to get a ride in, this is the perfect route. Beautiful rural backroads through cultivated fields, with invigorating climbs and incredible short descents. It's a route that has it all.

Aleix Ferrer – Girona, Spain
I’m Aleix Ferrer, born and raised in Girona.
I was always a runner who competed for many years, but after an injury, I had to stop completely, and I thought my time in sports had come to an end. Then cycling gave me a second chance to experience all the emotions I felt while running, emotions I thought I’d never feel again. Thanks to cycling, I discovered new places, new people, and new things about myself. I guide cycling tours for The Service Course and I have my own sports nutrition company called Fuel+, all while pursuing my studies.
I feel very grateful to live in a place like Girona, and I’m very happy to see how my hometown is evolving. In fact, I love being part of projects like this, where you meet people who share this passion for cycling and for what they do.
After a coffee in Girona, we went for an afternoon ride on the backroads of Canet D’Adri, chasing the sun. We were lucky enough to see one of the best sunsets I’ve seen in a long time. It’s truly beautiful for me to see people who aren’t from here enjoying this place where I grew up, and that brings me a lot of satisfaction.
«So cycling gave me a second chance to experience all the emotions I felt running and I thought I would never feel again.»
